Scotts Valley, Calif., January 14, 2013 - Proving he made the right decision by skipping the U23 race the day before, Easton Cycling-sponsored Team Rapha-FOCUS ‘ 21 year old phenom Zach McDonald rode to a stellar silver medal in the Elite National Cyclocross Championships this weekend in Verona, WI. Despite an astonishing 14 wins this season, team leader Jeremy Powers suffered a rare off day, but McDonald stepped up, turning in an amazing performance that cementing his transformation from future talent to present powerhouse.
In frigid conditions that turned a rolling course into a battfield of mud and ice, the reigning U23 Champion McDonald was at the front of the Elite race from the gun, part of a 6 man group that pulled away on the second lap led by eventual winner Jonathan Page. With 5 laps to go, McDonald was the only rider able to match Page’s pace and hovered a handful of seconds behind the leader until the final lap. McDonald finished well-clear of third place, riding in solo to claim the silver medal.
